Dr. Maria Montessori states in, Education for a New World, that “we shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe, and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.”

The Medicine Wheel booklets are teaching manuals originally created for Montessori teachers by Jennifer Welch Patten with Marlise Wabun Wind based on Sun Bear’s Vision.

The intention of this curriculum is to show you how the Medicine Wheel can be used as a Cultural study as well as a model for Peace and Education. The Medicine Wheel manuals have been valuable tools assisting educators, parents, and others in understanding indigenous wisdom. It is my belief that if we gain understanding of the ancient wisdom of the earth and create a feeling of love and mutual respect for life in all its forms, then we can bring our world into balance, and live together in peace and harmony with all living things.

Secondly, if we are truly acknowledging cultural diversity or teaching a diverse student body then, we need to begin to understand the principles and belief systems underlying each culture and to “see” through each of their eyes. I feel that as parents and teachers, in order to gain respect for children, we need to understand who they are and where they come from, so that we can guide them more fully into the future, and into who and what they are becoming. The Medicine Wheel booklets provide a roadmap, a path to follow, or a way to grow in alignment with Nature.

The Medicine Wheel booklets consist of five separate manuals – The Medicine Wheel, The Animal Wheel, The Mineral Wheel, The Plant Wheel, and The Color Wheel. Each particular book comes with Lesson Plans, and Legends that tell stories to integrate the teachings more fully. These manuals can be purchased separately or as a group for students ages 6-9, for students ages 9-12, or for individuals who want to learn more about this indigenous wisdom and how to connect with all relations upon this beautiful planet. These manuals can also be purchased with nomenclature - a three part card set consisting of the picture, title, and description - for hands-on learning or as manipulative materials for use in a classroom or homeschool setting.
